Where the Gathering will be in 2004
This year the North American Rainbow Gathering (hence referred to as
the Gathering) will be California from July 1 - July 7, near
the town of Madeline.
Directions
Both of these towns are on highway 395, about 140 miles north of Reno,
NV, in Modoc National Forest.
From Likely:
Go 29 miles south on Highway 64 to Bearcamp Flat and Homestead
Meadow. The turn is just before the Likely General Store. Turn right
if you are going north on Jess Valley Rd. (rt 64). Go approximately 9
miles and take the right fork. Follow this blak top looking for signs
saying Blue Lake and Patterson Valley. Spring Council suggested
avoiding county Rd 64, which is loaded with logging trucks, due to the
potential for accidents, but everyone that has been onsite, including
the locals, says this is the best route.
From Madeline:
Go east on Clark Valley road toward Long Valley, toward Corporation
Meadow, toward Highway 64. Then past Patterson Campground, then turn
left and uphill toward Bearcamp Flat. Homestead Meadow is the parking
area. I've been told this road is an unimproved dirt road that can
be very slow.
The weather at Bear Camp Flat during Spring Council was rain mixed
with snow. Please, anyone considering coming home at this time, be
prepared, good shelter, warm clothes and adequate foot wear. Here's
a link to a weather station in that rough aread.(Till I find a
closer location)
A link to the site via MapQuest (zoom in to see local roads) is
here.
A brother in Redding has made some better maps showing the roads by
the gathering. You can grab those from Richard's
Page. My local copies (these are big files) are here and here
A link to the topographical map for the site is here
An air photo is
here
Here's a few photos of the site:
Spring Council is asking all kitchens to bring at least 200' feet of black
3/4 inch hose line. Hawker is recommending 500' of 3/4 black pipe, one
3/4 to 3/4 splice, 1 3/4 barb to 1/2 inch female NPT fitting and one 1/2
female faucet and hose clamps. Also helpful to tap the spring is a 2
1/2 g bucket with a 1g coffee can inside and a bunch of cheese-cloth
and/or plastic screening. Also needed are plenty of 55g and larger
food grade water containers with spigots on the bottom. Pictures of
the kind of line needed can be found at Black Pipe Example
Additional information on the water system used to purify water for
this year is here. Clean
water helps keep us all healthy! A
PayPal account
has been opened by Hawker to help cover the cost of the filters, and other
expensive parts that need replacement every year.
Stone from CALM has also setup a paypal account for CALM
supplies. Go here for
that page.
It has also been suggested that with fire conditions the way they are,
cooking on propane where possible is probably a good idea.
There's a small regional bus service called "Sage Stage" that runs
from Reno airport up through Madeline and Likely for $22. Currently
only runs on Mon. and Thursday. Leaves 1:30pm at the Reno Greyhound,
and 1pm from the Reno Airport. Arrives in the Madeline area 4:30,
Likely at 4:45pm. They say they may add more trips if there's
demand. You can call them at 530-233-3883.

Happenings at the Gathering
There are many wonderful things that happen at a gathering, but I'll
list a few highlights. Remember the concept of "Rainbow Time", and
that any semi-scheduled event will start when it starts, and not
necessarily by the clock.
- July 4th, Circle for Peace
- Join us for a silent circling of people to pray for world
peace. The circle for peace starts at sunrise at main circle, and ends
around Rainbow noon after a period of OHMing, and the Kiddie Village
Parade!
For more information about Rainbow Gatherings, here are some
more documents.

thought I'd reproduce here.
- Benefits of Hosting a Rainbow Gathering
- This is an interesting document about the Environmental,
Spiritual, Health, and Law Enforcement Benefits of a Gathering.
- Rap on Rainbow Disorganization
- I grabbed this off AGR the other day, and thought it was a good
rough description about the "Organization" of a Rainbow Gathering.
- Reality Check
- I grabbed this off AGR the other day, and thought it was a good
introduction for Locals as to what to expect from having a Rainbow
Gathering nearby.
- Letter to District Rangers
- This is a letter written to the District Rangers in the Great
Lakes area where the gathering will was held last year.
- Rainbow Terminology
- This is an interesting paper on various other definitions of
Rainbow Family, and how that all applies to our own definitions of
Rainbow Family.

harassement are highly likely this year)

Other Sources of Information
Now that it's Spring Time, the Forest Service is cranking up their
disinformation propoganda machine. While the USFS tries heavily to
freak out the locals about the coming Gathering, usually the result is
no where as bad as they try to lead folks to believe. Here's a few
general media articles looking back on things from the perspective of
a year later.
- Modoc County
Record
- The Modoc Count Record so far is covering the Gathering in every
issue. (weekly). This is a recap of the
1984 Rainbow Gathering held near Likely. This next article talks about the Incident
Command Team and how they are unnecessary.
- Rainbows earn praise for cleanup
- This was published in the Salt Lake Tribune a month after the
gathering, and talks about the quality of the cleanup.
- Recap From PA
- This is a nice article, where the PA Chief of Police was
interviewed about the previous year's gathering. Not suprisingly, he
says the harsh propoganda put out by the Forest Service turned out to
be completely inaccurate, and that while there few problems, it just
wasn't that bad at all. Plus the local business made over $1,000,000.
- Without a Trace
- A recent article from the Missoula Independent, talking about how
the reality of the Montana gathering, was way less than the locals had
been led to believe.
- Oregon Cleanup
- This is an article from the Oregonian, about how well that site
has recovered.
- Montanna Cleanup
- This is an article from the Montana Standard about how well the
site has recovered.
- Idaho Cleanup
- This is an article from the Idaho Stateman, about how well that
site was cleaned up.
- Treading Softly On the Earth:The
Rainbow Tribe's Impact on Forest Lands.
- This article is an indepth look at the cleanup side of the Rainbow
Gatherings done by a Taos, NM college student. It goes into detail
covering the process of cleanup, and the comments of the various
Forest Service's District Rangers years later.
- Q&A
with Malcom Jowers
- Crystalhawk has put up a page with some questions posted by
Rainbow to Malcom Jowers, head of the Incident Creation Team of the
Forest Service.
